FMST 328/A (Fall 2024): NON-FICTION FILM SINCE 1956

This class is a survey of contemporary developments in non-fiction film and media arts with a particular focus on representations of popular music in non-fiction form. The course begins with an historical assessment of the developments in non-fiction film brought about by technological and societal changes in North America and Europe during the 1950s, to then continues with an analysis of different emerging media art forms all over the world devoted to the exploration of the connection between music and moving images in different subgenres: the concert or performance-based film, the artist portrait (the biopic), the making-of film, the ethnographic study, the compilation (or archive film), and so on.
