FMAN 315/A (Fall 2024): FROM IDEA TO STORYBOARD
This course proposes an exploration of the visual and written development of ideas and scripts in storyboard form.
Students will engage in creative and exploratory exercises involving timing, camera work, and use of cinematic language, leading to the creation of a final proposal in the form of an animatic. It involves the exploration and development of visual and written ideas for the purpose of solidifying a project and being able to clearly communicate it. The course covers the traditional storyboard approach and also proposes alternatives that are better suited for experimental content.
Students are required to produce in progressive stages, a detailed storyboard and/or written proposal that could eventually be used in the production of a film. In all exercises, emphasis will be put on cinematographic language, exploration, artistic expression, methodology, articulation, and representation of ideas in the cinematographic practice. Students are encouraged to investigate and reflect on their personal approach (form and content) toward the art form.
Participation and collaboration in discussions is really important as an exercise for professional practice. Each student will be asked to analyze and challenge their own productions as well as those of their peers. These discussions are important for the evaluation of ideas and for testing if they are successfully communicated.
