DRAW 200/BB (Fall/Winter 2024-25): DRAWING I

Fall 2024

This first year BFA level course introduces the fundamentals of drawing concepts, materials and techniques. Divided into two sections, the first half of the semester will focus on building technical proficiency around core formal elements such as tone, composition, and colour theory in relation to constructing an image. In the second half of the semester, we will shift to experimenting with alternative drawing tools and methods, exploring the relationship of the mark to the support/ surface, collage and assemblage processes and procedural drawing. Working from still lifes, nude models, nearby environments, intuition and imagination, we’ll explore a range of traditional and contemporary approaches to mark making. Course assignments focus on developing core technical skills through material experimentation, with the aim of probing the possibilities of drawing within the framework of contemporary art.

Our weekly sessions will feature demonstrations, in-class exercises and work periods; field trips; and group discussions. All listed homework is expected to be completed outside of class time: expect to spend a minimum of an additional 6 hours a week on assignments and reviewing course materials. Lots of exercises will be held during class time so attendance and participation is a must to succeeding in the course.

Expect to get dirty! Be sure to wear clothing you don’t care about or an apron/ smock to class so you can work freely. You are expected to purchase the required materials below if you don’t already have them and to come to class prepared to work with these supplies on hand.
