JOUR 445/02 (Winter 2024): ADVANCED PHOTOJOURNALISM
This is an advanced photojournalism workshop. You will be challenged to hone your technical skills, both as a photographer and an editor of your own work. Tasked with a variety of photo assignments, you will also learn how to operate in the field and meet the daily challenges of working as a photojournalist under a wide variety of circumstances. You will learn how to craft an effective picture story pitch, how to get the attention of photo editors and how to develop a beat. The course will explore issues related to working with difficult subjects and subject matter, current best ethical practices, personal safety and security and self-care in difficult situations. Together, we will examine new directions in photojournalism and documentary photography in a dramatically shifting media landscape. Finally, each of you will pitch, shoot, edit and present a long-form picture story on an approved subject of your choosing.
