JOUR 298/02 (Winter 2024): Journalism and Artificial Intelligence

Journalism and Artificial Intelligence will explore the rapid
rise of AI and the profound impact it is having on journalism,
both as a tool to develop new, innovative approaches to
reporting and as a potential menace that could make
combating disinformation campaigns ever more challenging.
OSINT researchers are using AI to comb through immense
datasets and search for clues that can help investigative
journalists track the perpetrators of war crimes. Tools like
Genesis and Midjourney are capable of generating
increasingly convincing news stories and photorealistic
images that present existential threats to reporters and
photojournalists. Through a series of lectures and case studies
as well as conversations with experts working on the
frontlines of this technology, students will develop a more
robust understanding of the particular challenges AI presents
to the journalism community and examine some of the
structural and ethical questions that are relevant both to
journalists and serious consumers of news media.
