JOUR 215/52 (Winter 2024): CONTEMPORARY NEWS MEDIA

Course Description: 

This course introduces students to the increasingly complex structures of modern media, and considers them in the context of journalism ideals. It examines the organizations, practices and problems of news media, focusing on key functions in day‑to‑day activities. This semester, the course will focus on some of the most pressing challenges facing journalism and some of the innovations that are altering the media landscape, from open source investigations to artificial intelligence. We’ll look at new trends in journalism and examine the ways in which technology is intersecting with news gathering and disrupting traditional distribution networks. Through case studies and specific examples including screenings, visual presentations and assigned readings, students will be prompted to participate in group discussions and think critically about some of the key issues in contemporary news media.
