ARTH 366/A (Winter 2024): STUDIES 19C ART/ARCHITECTURE

This survey course will examine the production and evolution of the fine arts during the nineteenth century. Through a chronological and thematic approach, this course will focus on European art beginning after the French Revolution and ending with the beginning of the First World War. The nineteenth century saw numerous and important changes, artistically, politically, socially and technologically, and these will be contextualized through the tentpole themes of Romanticism and Modernism. The European artistic canon will be studied to understand the art historical importance afforded to certain artists, institutions, and locations, but also to question the decisions that led to those outcomes. The course will also introduce students to notable art historical texts and theories developed during the nineteenth century to demonstrate how the discipline took shape at this time.
