Concordia University is located on unceded Indigenous lands. The Kanien’kehá:ka Nation is recognized as the custodians of the lands and waters on which we gather today. Tiohtià:ke/Montréal is historically known as a gathering place for many First Nations. Today, it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples. We respect the continued connections with the past, present, and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within the Montreal community.

COURSE OUTLINE:

ARTX 380 is an advanced level studio course that provides the opportunity to develop sustained studio practice and prepare participants for greater autonomy and future self-directed projects. Emphasis in this course will be on developing conceptual problem-solving skills, material investigations and exploring the many facets of relationship to self, other and beyond. Participants are encouraged to experiment, innovate, risk failure and be open to new possibilities through the examination of ideas, histories and ideologies.

What are the roles of art and the artist in contemporary society? How can art communicate, critique and transform? This class will be taught with an emphasis on Indigenous methodologies and perspectives. Written assignments, field trips and related class activities are designed to familiarize students with current issues, relationships and resources leading to a question of what and how do we decolonize? Possible answers to these questions will be determined through collaborative, interactive, social, and embodied and embedded art practices.

In this course, emphasis is placed on building relationships with a good mind, so that we learn from / with each other, and help / support each other in our respective practices.
