COMS 660/01 (Fall, 2023): DEF. & FUT. 0F MEDIA & TECH

This seminar explores the social, cultural, and psychological aspects of media and technology. Media are considered as both containers and expressions of culture. In addition, this seminar focuses on the impacts of new technologies and media. Topics may include the interaction of media and culture, the role of technology in the development of human consciousness and values, and the future of media in the light of emergent technologies and practices.

Fall 2023: This session, we will explore together the intersections of feminist, queer, anti-racist and decolonial theory and Science, Technology, and Society (STS). This intersection helps to foreground how structures of inequality are played out through and across the boundaries of naturecultures, human-nonhuman, new materialisms and structures of power. The course will seek to ground students not only in the what of a feminist/queer/anti-racist STS but the how of it; in other words, the texts open up critical issues in understanding our current conjuncture, but they also provide methodological toolkits for doing research otherwise. Students will have the opportunity to put these methods into practice through their final projects.
