Sound I is an introductory course in the technical aspects of recording and designing sound for cinema in support of projects undertaken in FMPR 332. During the course students will be exposed to the basic technical and theoretical foundations that make up 'film sound' via lectures, practical exercises, and individual projects. Students will also learn to consider and employ creative approaches to conceptualizing and recording sound for their own core production projects.

Areas of practice-based instruction will consist of field recording, studio recording, and sound editing in order to create original soundtracks for film, while also familiarizing students with MHSoC sound resources and workflows. Students will be required to work with Pro Tools to record, edit, and mix sound, however, this is not a technical certification course on software. Students are encouraged to use time outside of class to further explore and deepen their understanding of the software.
