Workshop on Art Interpretation Dr. Richard Lachapelle, Professor

Through gallery visits and different activities and exercises, we will explore various approaches to art appreciation that can be adapted for use in teaching different age groups.  This course will be conducted as a workshop: that is, we will go to museums and galleries and actively engage in various art appreciation activities and, then, discuss the results in class.  These are examples of some of the approaches we will investigate:  collaborative learning, points of entry approach, art making as a form of response, the guided tour, informed experience, informant-made videos, and audio-guides.

Course components will consist of visits to exhibitions, assigned readings, class discussions based on readings and museum visits, and student presentations on their topics of inquiry. Therefore, as a workshop course, students’ engagement in course activities will determine, to a large extent, the content of the course and the extent of its successful outcome.
