ARTH 356/A (Fall, 2023): Studies in the Materials and Processes of Art: Design.HER: DIY in Interiors

This course delves into the interdisciplinary realm of interiors by focusing on the materials and processes employed in 20th-century design, and residential architecture, with a strong focus on the work of women and those who identify as women designers and creators. How did women integrate DIY into their design practice? How might we understand contemporary DIY culture in relation to these important spaces? By engaging in a creative analysis of an interior that is important to them, students will learn first-hand how to analyze interior design in light of aesthetic, historical, and gender concerns. Throughout the course, students will engage with scholarly articles, theoretical texts, historical documents, and visual materials to develop a comprehensive understanding of the materials and processes employed within interiors, design, and architecture. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to articulate informed interpretations of spatial environments.
