PHOT 498/A (Fall, 2023): SPECIAL TOPICS IN PHOTO

Course Description

The goal of this course is to provide a framework within which students will develop the skills necessary to begin a career as an emerging professional artist. The main objective of the course is to demystify the working life of a professional artist, and to provide students with a set of tools that will help them feel autonomous and proactive about their careers in art. Students will gain insight into the processes of applying to graduate school; the process of proposing their work for exhibition; applying for funding from arts organizations; and prepare a verbal introduction of their practice as well as a portfolio of their work for presentation. In addition, we will examine some of the strategies that are used to promote an artists career, including writing about one’s own work, participating in artist-in-residence programs, obtaining commercial representation and developing a professional network.
