blocks Add Block:This is the only block which cannot be removed. It only appears when Editing is on, and only displays those blocks which are not currently appearing in your course. You cannot have two instances of the same type of function block.

activitiesActivities Block: The Activities block provides direct, shortcut access to interactive activities by type. Various discussion forums may be spread across different theme boxes, for example, but this box will provide a direct-access menu to all of them.

adminAdministration Block:The Administration block provides instructors access to a list of adminstrative options key to maintaining the course website. On the student screen, it provides primarily access to their grades.

calendarCalendar Block:You may put up a calendar where important events are listed.
1) Global Events are site-wide announcements posted by the Moodle administrator. 2) Course Events are key dates in the course, as posted by you, the instructor. 3) Group Events may be visible only to members of the same group. User Events are dates which an individual student posts on the calendar. These are visible only to that student.

coursesCourses Block: The Courses Block provides direct access to the other Moodle-based courses in which the student might be registered. A student may elect, from this block, to view the entire Moodle Course Menu.

latestnews Latest News Block:The Latest News block provides you with an area for timely reminders and announcements.

people The People Block: The People block allows you to quickly see the profile of all students registered in your course. When visible to students, it gives them the same capability. It is through this block that students may edit their personal profile. There is only one personal profile, which is seen the same from all Moodle courses. The People block is indispensible for setting up workgroups within the course.

searchThe Search Block: The Search Block only searches through discussion board postings, not through documents posted by the teacher. It will, therefore, only be of use in courses which make extensive use of class discussion as a teaching tool.

summaryThe Summary Block: The Summary Block allows the posting of an always-visible course summary. It could be re-purposed to present any other desired 'always-visible' short text.

weeksThe Weeks/Topics Block:Depending on the course layout selected, this box provides a shortcut directly to a given week or topic box. Where only some weeks or topics are posted, this box will distinguish active weeks or topics from non-active ones.

recentRecent Activity Block: The Recent Activity block shows recent activity on the course site, and could be used as a shorthand for announcements and updates as to new posting. Hidden from the students, it can be a reminder of work recently done.

usersOn-Line Users Block:This block will show students what other students are currently on-line within the Moodle environment (or within the given course - this has not yet been determined).
